My freshman year, I stepped onto the Iowa State campus majoring in psychology with the mindset of becoming a psychiatrist.
I knew I wanted to help people so I naturally picked the medical school path. When I failed my third chemistry exam in a row, I realized I needed to change my goals so the plan I had for two years was gone in a span of two months. After having an unhealthy amount of existential crises, I decided to take JL MC 240: The principles of journalism. I enjoyed writing and was an avid news reader growing up so the class seemed like a good fit. The Iowa State Daily Editorial Adviser, Mark Witherspoon, came to my class to recruit students for the newspaper and I quickly found myself sitting in a classroom, learning how to become a reporter. I've never looked back since. Throughout the spring and summer, I covered stories ranging from a student making a name in the makeup industry to analyzing the lease gap in Ames. From the frantic calls for last minute sources to the endless all-nighters, the life of a journalist is exhausting and I wouldn't have it any other way. |
